Discover the Castle of San Juan de Blanes

The Castle of San Juan de Blanes, is located on top of a mountain with its same name and raised to about 173 meters above sea level. From it you can see the entire flat of the Tordera, the coastal mountain range, the Montseny and on clear days you can see the silhouette of the mountain of Montjuic. On the eastern side, you can see the cape of Tossa and the interior, the Sierra de les Gavarres.

The castle consists of a cylindrical tower of about 15 meters of height declared cultural good of national interest, and of a rectangular walled enclosure, that demonstrates the structure of the oldest distributions of the Catalan castles. This fortification was built to protect the city of Barcelona by the northern band.

The origins of the castle date from the eleventh and twelfth centuries, served to monitor the maritime incursions of pirates, especially at times when the kingdom of Mallorca was of Arab domain. The maximum moment of its splendor was between the thirteenth and fifteenth centuries, at the time when the viscounts of Cabrera were expanding their territorial domain. Especially highlights the fourteenth century, when the castle, the villa and the palace of Blanes are located at the sea end of an impressive axis of fortification that was called “line of castles of the Tordera”. It was a set of fortresses strategically located to protect Barcelona from the north, as a result of the destruction inflicted on the castle by Felipe III the Bold of France in 1285 and the wars against the Genoese in 1332. The period of its decadence goes between the XVI – XVIII centuries. In 1588 the castle was badly damaged, as it was partially destroyed and served as a quarry for the construction of the convent of the Capuchins.

Two interventions have been carried out in order to make the most emblematic monument of the city of Blanes last. In 1956 the Board of Reconstruction of the Castle of San Juan, formed by different personalities of the society of Blanes. Between the years 1987-1991, a renovation project was drafted and executed by the architects from Girona, Fuses and Viader, leaving the historic complex in its current state.
